[27:4]  1 tn Following the imperative, the cohortative (with the prefixed conjunction) indicates purpose or result.

[27:4]  2 tn Heb “so that my soul may bless you.” The use of נַפְשִׁי (nafshi, “my soul”) as the subject emphasizes that the blessing will be made with all Isaac’s desire and vitality. The conjunction “so that” closely relates the meal to the blessing, suggesting that this will be a ritual meal in conjunction with the giving of a formal blessing.

[27:19]  3 tn Heb “get up and sit.” This may mean simply “sit up,” or it may indicate that he was to get up from his couch and sit at a table.

[27:19]  4 tn Heb “so that your soul may bless me.” These words, though not reported by Rebekah to Jacob (see v. 7) accurately reflect what Isaac actually said to Esau (see v. 4). Perhaps Jacob knew more than Rebekah realized, but it is more likely that this was an idiom for sincere blessing with which Jacob was familiar. At any rate, his use of the precise wording was a nice, convincing touch.

[28:1]  5 tn Heb “you must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.”

[31:55]  6 sn Beginning with 31:55, the verse numbers in the English Bible through 32:32 differ by one from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 31:55 ET = 32:1 HT, 32:1 ET = 32:2 HT, etc., through 32:32 ET = 32:33 HT. From 33:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.

[31:55]  7 tn Heb “and Laban got up early in the morning and he kissed.”

[31:55]  8 tn Heb “his sons.”

[31:55]  9 tn Heb “to his place.”

[48:9]  10 tn Heb “my.”

[48:9]  11 tn Heb “and he”; the referent (Joseph’s father) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[48:9]  12 tn The cohortative with prefixed vav (ו) indicates purpose after the imperative.

[48:15]  13 tn Heb “shepherded me.” The verb has been translated as an English noun for stylistic reasons.

[48:20]  14 tn The pronoun is singular in the Hebrew text, apparently elevating Ephraim as the more prominent of the two. Note, however, that both are named in the blessing formula that follows.

[48:20]  15 tn Or “pronounce a blessing.”

[48:20]  16 sn On the elevation of Ephraim over Manasseh see E. C. Kingsbury, “He Set Ephraim Before Manasseh,” HUCA 38 (1967): 129-36; H. Mowvley, “The Concept and Content of ‘Blessing’ in the Old Testament,” BT 16 (1965): 74-80; and I. Mendelsohn, “On the Preferential Status of the Eldest Son,” BASOR 156 (1959): 38-40.

[22:6]  17 tn Heb “blessed.” However, see v. 8, where rewards are given.

[22:6]  18 tn Heb “and they went to their tents.”
